So, there I was last night, chopping some onions thinking, ‘what the heck am I going to say about the Fleetwood game?’ when I sliced off the top my finger. I can’t deny that, for a split second, I had a brief sense of relief that a four-hour wait in A&E would give me a reprieve from having to write something.
That’s why this is late. I’m just marking the occasion and meeting my self-appointed obligations. I won’t be staying long.
Of course, there were good bits; a point is better than a defeat, Gatlin O’Donkor’s goal was a nice milestone to see, we are, at least digging in and applying ourselves to the task at hand. There was even a perverse joy in glancing over to the scoreboard when they scored to see the time flick from zero to one minute. It’s the small things.
But, it speaks volumes that the full-time whistle wasn’t greeted with a boo or a cheer, but an eery silence. We had come, ticked the box, and now we were leaving. The romance of Tuesday ‘under the lights’ is exactly that, a romance; most midweek games are cold and lifeless; ask the 69 hardy Fleetwood fans, including the “McCod army”, who are allegedly, according to their massive flag, from Edinburgh, a further 200 miles north of Fleetwood. I mean if you’re going to follow a far away team, you might as well go all in.
Fleetwood are a weirdly un-storied team; they’ve been in the Football League for eleven years, and must have been promoted at some point, given that they’re in League One. But, have they done anything meaningful apart from sell Jamie Vardy to Fleetwood?
We seem to be having a bit of a Fleetwood of a season; it’s happening, it’s punctuated by things which might mean something to the diehards, but it’s ultimately directionless. It feels like we should be sponsored by Animalates and wearing a Nike template kit, like we’re treading water until the next thing comes along.
It’s weird that we’ve lost such momentum after last season which felt so much more fluid and exciting. Perhaps we need the break of the FA Cup and the potential of a run deep in that competition, maybe we need the January transfer window to strengthen where we didn’t during the summer or perhaps we need to have the division’s big bears come down so we can have a pop at them for a laugh. I really hope something’s going to happen, otherwise I might find myself slicing more fingers off, just to avoid having to find things to write about.
